Questions of Happiness – Alphaville interviewed by fans; #001

Elena Amosova: Ever since I first saw a video for SLAM I was curious about it, but whenever I had a chance to ask you a question personally I kept forgetting that curiosity of mine. So it’s now or never! I’m not curious about that golden microphone, neither am I curious about those two-faced dancers. They’re all fine. What I’d like to know is WHY on Earth was the video filmed on ice??? Contrary to the common belief that there are roller dancers there, I can see ice lines and skating blades… So why was it the ice rink? Why was such unusual location chosen? Wasn’t it too cold there? And why didn’t you guys wear ice skates too? This would have made quite an interesting image I do believe.

Marian Gold: Dear Elena, it was the idea of the video director to choose an ice rink for the shooting location. Maybe it was in order to add a kind of weightless feeling to the motions of the dancers. It was damn cold during the shoot and we were wearing nothing but our thin stage clothes. The outfit for our first single, the Norwegian pullovers we were so happy to get rid of, would have suited much better this time. There was a bottle of vodka instead which answers not only your question about the skates but also the vivid make up on my face; I have to say we all felt pretty weightless during the shoot, even without the skates.

PS: … as you read in an earlier post on this blog you currently have the chance not only to win an exclusive MP3* of the demo version of QUESTIONS OF HAPPINESS, an unreleased Alphaville song, you also have the chance to raise a few questions and to do a fan-interview with Alphaville. How that works? Just click here to find out, you can still join in.

Questions Of Happiness – raise them, read the lyrics and win an unreleased song.
… as you read in an earlier post on this blog you currently have the chance not only to win an exclusive digital copy (MP3) of the demo version of QUESTIONS OF HAPPINESS (an unreleased Alphaville song), you also have the chance to raise a few questions and do a fan-interview with Alphaville. How that works? Just click here to find out.
PS. The illustration above is pure fiction and for entertainment purpose only.

Questions Of Happiness
What is the name of your god? Is the sun floating ‘round a clock? And does time really matter or matters matter time? And who’s that in the mirror? Who´s that man with my face?Don’t you think that his smile looks a little bit, just a little bit out of place?
And he’s all so true and he’s all so rightThey’re all so astounding these people of black and whiteCos’ they’re so full of lies, let them pray now
And it’s all so cruel and it’s all so tightTo do or die, see you there on the other side
I missed you last night, let me dream now…
There are so many questions, there are so many marksThere are so many reasons, each of them good enough to kill forBut answers are rare because life just goes onAnd it consumes all the answers in an act of mercy
And they’re oh so true and they’re oh so rightThey’re oh so astounding these people of black and whiteCos’ they’re so full of lies, let them pray now
And it’s all so cruel and it’s all so tightTo do or die, see you there on the other side
I missed you last night, let me dream now…
I see you walking on a beach in the beautiful moonlightAnd the shells in the sand are answers the sea has washed ashoreThe sea has the answers, you see and you smile like a goddessYou’re too proud for all those answersYou look great and then we go for a swim…
And it’s oh so cool and it’s oh so rightTo do or die, see you there on the other side
Let me dream now…

DOUBLE FEATURE: Your chance to interview Alphaville – and to win an unreleased song!

Ever wondered about a song’s meaning or inspiration or background? Ever wanted to know something about the production process of your favorite Alphaville album? Ever wanted to know about the story behind the cover of a specific Alphaville record? Ever wanted to ask Marian something, but never had a chance to do so? Or … alternatively Maja Kim? …or Martin Lister? … or Jakob Kiersch or Dave Goodes?
Well, here’s your chance to interview Alphaville and, with a little bit of luck, to win one of 30 digital copies of the yet unreleased Alphaville Song “QUESTIONS OF HAPPINESS” (studio recording, demo version). Please note: this exclusive song will NOT be on the upcoming album with the working title STRANGE ATTRACTOR!
[Update: Initially the song to win was LONDON SKY. When comparing versions with Alphaville, the band literally rediscovered this nifty tune – which now may make it’s way to some upcoming official release. For this reason we decided to give away QUESTIONS OF HAPPINESS instead to the lucky winners; a song which has, by the way, a nice and fitting name for an interview-event.]
How does it work?
From april 24 to may 30, 2013, you have the chance to send in one ore more questions (to be more precise: as many questions as you like) you always wanted to ask any Alphaville member - to do so, please use the link at the bottom of this article. If you like to, you can also add a photo of yourself which might be published (in case your question is chosen).
All questions which meet the rules below are accepted and will be forwarded to the musicians they are addressed to. Answers to selected questions will be published here on www.alphavillenow.com, later this year and step by step. Aaaand – how to win the song “QUESTIONS OF HAPPINESS”?
It’s easy: each sunday in may (5.5., 12.5., 19.5. and 26.5.) five winners will be randomly drawn from all submitted and accepted questions, the winners will be announced (with their full name) here on www.alphavillenow.com.
Additionally, ten more winners will be drawn and announced on june 2
All winners will receive their prize per email on june 9.

Are only questions from winners to be answered?
No. It’s up to the band to decide which questions will be answered. So wining a copy of QUESTIONS OF HAPPINESS does not automatically mean that the questions sent in by the winner will be answered. And, vice versa, not winning a song might still mean that your questions could be answered later on.Answers to fan questions will be published here on alphavillenow.com from time to time later on.

By participating you accept the following rules:
Ask your questions to one (or more) band members. Start each of your questions with: “This question is addressed to” – so we know from whom you wish to receive an answer.
The deadline for your submission is may 30, 12.00 CET.
Questions like “When will you play live in..”, “When will you come to…”, “When will the new album (or single) be released?” or similar are not accepted, same goes for insulting questions or questions that contain harassment – ask a question you would ask in public and that can be answered in public as well.
The audience of this blog is a global one, and the language most people understand is english - that’s why we’re communicating in english here. The question you submit has to be written in english. If you feel you are not able to write a question in proper english, please ask a friend for help – the better we understand you the more precise we can answer. Online-translation tools may be helpful but, in most cases, they don’t deliver a result that matches the initial input. Please understand that questions in other languages than english or that are not understandable can not be accepted.
If you win or if your questions are selected to be answered, they will be published on alphavillenow.com, together with your full name (and, eventually, with your photo - if you submitted one). Please keep in mind: As alphavillenow.com runs on a social platform (tumblr.com), all content published can be and will be duplicated by other people on the web by reblogging posts or simply by sharing them. By submitting your questions for this raffle you agree that you are aware of this fact, that you are fine with the release and the possible duplication and that you release alphaville and alphavillenow.com from any responsibilities.
It’s up to the band members to decide which questions will be answered, so even if you win an answer is not guaranteed. Of course the aim is to get as many questions answered as possible. In case that similar questions are received, one of them will be selected randomly.
In case you win, you will receive your mp3 of QUESTIONS OF HAPPINESS on june 9 via email.
In case you win, you agree that you will not publish the song you received as a gift from Alphaville anywhere on the web. Else, legal action may be taken, and (even worse) further raffles like this may not happen – and still, we really plan to do so.
Are you ready?

then…
– write down your questions (and whom you are asking) – double check if your questions meets the rules above
– add your full name and, if you like, a photo of yours
…next, use the link below to open an e-mail-window for your submission.

THE ALPHAVILLE 30th ANNIVERSARY RARITY RAFFLE (Details here, contest closed now)
This march we had a creativity event running here on www.alphavillenow.com, and an unexpected amount of creative fans from all over the world contributed photos, drawings, paintings, poems, sculptures and more - a huge thank you to all participants, and congratulations to the lucky winners.

A little update: initially your prices were planned to be sent out on april 15. Other than that, we decided to throw you an easter party by mailing out all prices already this very evening. Enjoy!

…above you find the winning works of art  #20 to #29 –
here’s # 30, the short story

“ON THE BEACH” by Olek Trembowiecki:

New Year’s Eve, Puerto Arecibo’s coast.

11:12 p.m.

- Dude, it’s dark and creepy here. If it wasn’t for that 100 bucks, I’d run from here like hell

– Jonathan looked really uncomfortably sitting on the sand with a can of beer in his hand and staring at the ocean. Robert had counted all the beers he’s already drunk, but stopped around 8th, and it was over an hour ago.

- Jon, remember - you’ve agreed to help me with this… project.

- You mean dumb enough no-life that had nothing better to do today, eh? Jonathan was a janitor in the observatory and yes, he was generous enough to agree helping Robert instead of heaving good time at one of the parties celebrating New Year. His generosity was costing Robert $100.

- So – again – what’s my role? – asked Jonathan.

- Here, take this camera and be ready. Strange things will happen and I won’t be able to film it. This is when you step in.

- Er… what will it be then? I mean these things. You’re making a porn?

- Porn? No! Of course not. Well, you’ll be filming close encounter of the third kind, my friend.

- Close what of third what? – Robert slowly but surely started to worry, as Jonathan seemed to be seriously plastered.

- We’re about to meet a form of extra-terrestrial right here, any minute now.

- I still don’t get what you’re talking about, dude.

- UFO will come here, damn it!

- Whatever, man. If you don’t want to tell me, then don’t. Just be sure to have that 100 bucks for me when we’re done – Jonathan shrugged.

– But I’m pretty sure it’s gonna be some kinky stuff.

Robert got slightly depressed. He was a scientist working in nearby observatory and it was today, that he spotted that strange signal. It was alien transmission and it was… in English. It was also already late, and he was sitting alone in the room filled with big computers, monitors etc. He answered the signal and got back a message plus coordinates. The message was: ‘take your most advanced communication device with you’. Nothing more – just these few words. Coordinates pointed the beach by Puerto Arecibo. So he immediately asked Jonathan (who was washing the floor at the moment) for help, got to his car and half an hour later they were sitting on the beach – waiting for whatever was to happen. Most advanced communication device… The first thought that came to Robert’s mind was: iPhone! He just bought himself new iPhone 5, which fitted perfectly the description. But why do aliens need his phone? It was beyond him. Robert reached for the phone and felt like he got paralized. No phone! He must have left it in the observatory. - Noooo! – Robert yelled.

– Listen Jon, and listen carefully. I must return to the observatory, but be right back. And if these aliens arrive… stall them! Do you understand?! Make them wait for me!

Do-you-understand?!

- Whatevs. Just go and I’ll like sit here, wait and stall these porn chicks for you. Robert ran to his car. Jonathan watched him disappear between trees and then turned to ocean again.

- I could be at the party, maybe getting laid if everything went smooth, but no, I’m sitting on this cold sand like an idiot, staring at this sea or ocean or whatever this oversized puddle is – he muttered and opened another beer.

11:28 p.m.

- A mist? What else? Come on…

– Jonathan grumbled. Indeed – the whole beach got filled with thick fog. Suddenly a man appeared – just in front of Jonathan.

- What the fuck?! Do you want to scare me to death, you… George Clooney?! Because – indeed – it was George Clooney standing right before him. Oh, and he was naked.

- Greetings, earthling – said George.

- What are you doing here? And why are you naked?!

– Jonathan was seriously disturbed.

- Oh, do you feel uncomfortable with this form of my body?

- Duh! I can see you wiener!

And then something inexplicable happened. Clooney melted (or at least he looked like he was melting) and few seconds later he became… Beyonce Knowles. Of course she was naked too.

- Is it better now? – she asked.

- Fuck yeah! – Jonathan’s eyes became big and he was smiling big time.

– But who… I mean what are you? And where’s this mist from? - The fog is caused by my space ship, which hovers over the water. And I am your creator.

- Yeah right. I know how my dad looks like and you look nothing like him, sweetie.

- I’m not your father, no. I created all of you, human beings. And now I’ve traveled through space to see where you’re at.

- Oh, I’m HERE for sure, lady – said Jonathan and, probably accidentally, flexed his muscles. - I mean – what you’ve achieved, what is the level of your technological development. Do you have something for me?

- I have a beer. Want some, sweetheart?

- No, thank you. I’m asking about the communication device.

- Honey, drink a can of beer and we’ll surely communicate on much better level, if you know what I mean.

- An electronic device allowing you to communicate with other remote human beings.

- What?…

- I’ve created many species on many planets. After some time all of them invent devices that let them communicate with other remote individuals. Degree of advancement of these devices are indicating the degree of technological development of these species. If it’s advanced enough, it lets me think they’re ready for my knowledge, so I share my knowledge about technologies you can only dream of. Intergalactic journeys, alternative realities… it all mey be yours. I just need your communication device for evaluation. If the evaluation will be positive – I’ll be back soon to offer you all my knowledge and technology. If the results won’t be satisfactory, I’ll destroy all your kind on this planet to start anew, because you had so much time to develop and wasted it - meaning you’re worthless. So?… Do you have it?

- Listen sweetie, I have no idea what you’re talking about. You mean – my camera? Should I start filming you or what?

- It’s worse than I expected. No, I meant…

– Beyonce concentrated, her eyes rolled up for a second.

– You probably call it a phone.

- A phone? Sure! Here’s my excellent Nokia 3310, it’s working like a charm, honey. Take it and call whatever you need, babe – Jonathan gave Beyonce his cellphone.

- Thank you. Before I leave – is there anything you’d wish for? Maybe you’d like to know secrets of the universe? Or find out about other planets suitable for your human organisms?

 - Call me Jonny, sweetie.

- So, Jonny… what’s your wish?

- You know, since you’re so sexy and naked, there’s actually one thing that comes to my mind…

11:56 p.m.

- I’m… back! I’m… back, Jonathan!

– Robert was literally out of breath. He looked at Jonathan, who was still lying on the sand drinking beer. He must have drunk a few more cans, because his face was somewhat blissful.

– Was anything happening while I wasn’t here?

- Yep – Jonathan belched.

– You know, this fog appeared and naked George Clooney came out of it and then he changed into Beyonce and I bonked her and then she disappeared in the fog.

- Damn it Jon, this was your last beer. That’s it! You won’t ruin this breakthrough moment for our planet just because you’re pissed! We’re going to sit here and wait even the whole night, if it’s necessary. And you have to be ready and conscious!

- Whatevs. I’m going to sleep. Wake me up when your porn starlets arrive.

- Oh, shut up and sleep, you pissed ass, and I’ll wait here for our moment of glory

– Robert couldn’t believe how anyone can sleep in this situation instead of dying from excitement. He looked up at the starry endless sky.

– Any minute now. Any minute…

Tech talk with Bernhard Lloyd

Jon Erik: What made the sound of the Forever young album? The sounds are so special. Is it the SSL-mixer? Did you use any special effects gear? Maybe Lexicon 224?Bernd: The basic of the FY Album are definitely the Synths we used:Roland Jupiter 8, PPG Wave 2.2, Korg MS 20 and MS 10, Roland M 100 System, a Solina String.Plus the Drummachines: Roland TR 808, Linn LM 1.The Mixing Desk was a heavily modified very old Amek. I don´t remember the type. And, yes, we used a Lexicon 224 Reverb, which was really outstanding at that time and added an important colour to the album. So no SSL involved in the FY album. Those metallic effects, like the Toms on Victory of love (1st verse):They were made with the Jupiter 8 in conjunction with an Roland SDE 2000, a great digital delay unit, that we also used a lot.Additional drumsounds came drom an old Simmons SDS 3 and an SDS 7.Jon Erik: The synth collage intro of BIJ, how did you make such sounds?
Bernd: You are probably talking about the album-version. It´s quiet simple. We reversed the cymbal sound, that´s on the very end of BIJ, with an analog 2-track and put it through the 224. The synthriff is a sound from the Jupiter 8.
