[Updated] Martin Lister: Half Light/Kim Halliday

One of Martins last projects was the  album Half LIght together with his friend Kim Halliday. Halflight is the second album on Ravello Records by Kim Halliday, following up Birdsong In Mist (2012). The album includes 17 pieces written and recorded in London and Berlin, and mastered in Berlin, produced by Martin Lister of Alphaville.  Featuring manipulated vocals, guitars and keys, along with loops and sound design techniques, Halflight continues to exploit an aesthetic of distorting and effecting real instruments & sounds in an effort to comfort and disturb in equal measure. The above youtube video offers some remarkable excerpts. If you want to listen to more or if you want to buy the album a visit at Kim Hallidays Bandcamp-Website is strongly suggested. Just beware and do not buy the halflight sampler there, because only excerpts are sold (and you can listen to them for free right on the page anyway):
https://kimhalliday.bandcamp.com/album/halflight-sampler-2
If you intend to buy the full album you can get it on itunes:
https://itunes.apple.com/artist/kim-halliday/id311091160

Update:
… here’s a useful comment from Kim:

Dear Tobias
Thank you for your posting on the Alphavillle Now site about Halflight.  Just one thing, the Bandcamp site with the sampler allows you to put in zero as the price, so you don’t need to pay for the sampler.  We have also set up two completely free downloads, Drift at bit.ly/driftfreedl and Creepers at bit.ly/creepersfreedl.  We’re asking people to donate towards a heart charity for Creepers, but if they want to just take the music for nothing, again you can choose zero as the price you pay.
Thanks
Kim

What you might want to know about CREEPERS (taken from the web site):

As you might know, my dear friend, collaborator and producer Martin Lister passed away unexpectedly at the end of May. Martin’s fiancé Anja and I thought it would be nice to make Creepers available for free download, but also to make it possible for Martin’s fans to donate an amount to charity in his memory. This Bandcamp download page allows a “pay what you like” option, so if you’d like to download the track and donate, please do that. We’ll pass all the money onto a charity called Cardiac Risk in the Young (www.c-r-y.org.uk) when the album is released on 11/11/14.

NEW ALPHAVILLE SONG “Giants”
During the 30th Anniversary Concert in Paris Alphaville performed three new songs, MAFIA ISLAND, THE WINE OF ASTONISHMENT and GIANTS. To fulfill requests popping up in the international Alphaville Forum “New Horizons" the lyrics will be published here sequentially, and here’s …

Giants

I hate to sleep but I love to dream, it drives me to places that I’ve never seen
My mind is in flames, I pray they will stay, f you felt this fire you know what I’m sayin’
Here’s my plan for a journey supreme, board the ship of your follies as soon as U can
That big crystal chariot, that mystery plane, for once they departed, theyll never return

And we’re masqueraders, much bigger than life, so full of illusions, don’t let it die
And we can be giants although we’re so small, coz’ nobody’s perfect, nobody’s perfect at all

The beat’s on the outside, don’t wait till it ends, we’re ready to go now, it’s all in our hands
And worn out proportions will fall into one, don’t care where we’re going to before we are gone

And we’re desperados, much bigger than life, so full of desire, don’t let it die
But we can be giants although we’re so small, just do what you will is the whole of the law

And we’re astral bodies, much bigger than life, so full of desire, don’t let it die
& we can be giants reaching out for a star, we’re shepherds of dreams, we are what we are…

NEW ALPHAVILLE SONG “The Wine Of Astonishment”
During the 30th Anniversary Concert in Paris Alphaville performed three new songs, MAFIA ISLAND, THE WINE OF ASTONISHMENT and GIANTS. To fulfill requests popping up in the international Alphaville Forum “New Horizons" the lyrics will be published here sequentially, and here’s …

The Wine Of Astonishment

"The woman was clothed in purple and scarlet (….), having in her hand a gold cup full of abominations and of the unclean things
of her immorality and on her forehead a name was written, a mystery, “Babylon the Great, the Mother of Harlots and obscenities
of the Earth. (…) And when I saw her, I wondered greatly.” Revelation 17.5

"You have showed your people hard things—you have made us to drink the wine of astonishment.
You have given a banner to those who fear you, that it may be displayed because of the truth.” Psalm 60:3, 4

The wine of astonishment she poured into his glass, doorways in the sand
Creep, shadows, creep, dwellers in the mirage
Seven footprints to the devil and a hunger for thrills
Love’s a lovely counterfeit, she was his big time girl…

She sang for her supper but did something else for her midnight snack
She’s just a cat of many tails
He was a boy in the asphalt jungle, fair game for a tigress on the prowl

He studied the gay science and the birth of tragedy, the will to power
He was caught beyond the good & the evil, frozen in the twilight of idols
How green was her valley but murder steals the spotlight, yeah…
She sang for her supper…

The teeth of evidence, a kingdom for a hearse, bats are flying at dusk
The beckoning doors, a streetcar named desire
Saints play with fire, they ride the pink horse…
She sang for her supper…

NEW ALPHAVILLE SONG “Mafia Island”
During the 30th Anniversary Concert in Paris Alphaville performed three new songs, MAFIA ISLAND, THE WINE OF ASTONISHMENT and GIANTS. To fulfill requests popping up in the international Alphaville Forum “New Horizons" the lyrics will be published here sequentially, starting with …

MAFIA ISLAND (Chephren’s Barge)

Yes, we sailed over the storm whipped, jade-green sea
On Chephren’s barge to Mafia island
We broke coral and drank whiskey in the glowing heat
And the sunsail slattered in the wind like beserk machine guns

And the girls from the bar, they were bathing at the beach
And they sang with a melancholic voice soft words that were caught
Between the sound of the waves and they sang in a melancholic voice

We’re stuck here for good, the radio had broken off
Just a few days ago
The ether swelled as the earth ran dry
Nothing moved in the flickering ardour

And the girls from the bar, they were bathing at the beach
And they sang with a melancholic voice soft words that were caught
Between the sound of the waves, yes, they sang in a melancholic voice…
Melancholic…

Blank & Jones
so8os presents ALPHAVILLE

PROMO SHEET:

Seeds - From The Secret Lives of Alphaville

The original lyrics of the track were written in German titled „Leben Ohne Ende“ which were later translated into English as “Seeds” in order to obtain a harmonious b-side for the ‘Big In Japan’ single. The German version was inspired by a lyric for one of Bernard’s earliest compositions then titled ‘Red Rose’ (not to be exchanged with the song of the same name from ‘Afternoons in Utopia’). A decade further on Bernard’s ‘Red Rose’ would turn into “Iron John”, again with different words, since the former ones ended up in ‘Seeds’.

To me Bernard’s tune was an electronic love song with its robotic, machinelike groove set against a highly romantic mood expressed by its original English lyrics, written and sung by our Bernie himself. But due to the Kraftwerky touch of the music I decided to provide it with German lyrics.

I kept the idea of a love song but changed the setting into a surreal ambience of social desaster, genetic engineering and political manipulaton. These images delivered the backdrop to Bernard’s love story in which our “girl” works in a “factory” which produces the “genes of the world”, the origin of all being in this future world and in fact a counter-image to the idea of “love” and “womanhood” as the givers of life.

A few months later on Bernard and Frank began working on new music and suddenly there occured a possibility for a new song. That moment is an unstable, fleeting instant. You have to catch the bubble as it flies or it is gone for good. I desperately needed words to fixate the melodic ideas for the track and what was at hand were the fresh lyrics for Bernhard’s ‘Red Rose’. I grabbed them and ‘Leben ohne Ende’ came to life.

From mid-1983 on Alphaville sailed through a storm of unlikely events. We signed a big deal with a big record company, started a big production for the big international markets and had a big schedule for our Big in Japan single. We almost forgot we would need a b-side for it. And naturally there was only one song that would come into question.

Who’s that new guy on stage with Alphaville?

Here’s a synopsis of an Interview with the new keyboard guy on stage, Carsten Brocker - led and summed up by Andrea Ruby and Andreas Engfeldt from Sweden:

After the concert in Wroclaw, we had the opportunity to meet Alphaville’s new keyboardist, Carsten Brocker. A laid-back and happy chap, he kindly made time for a chat with us. Carsten has listened to Alphaville since a young age. Through the years, he has played the keyboards in several different bands, but this is the first time that he is in a band as big as Alphaville. He finds it easy to learn to play new songs quickly, so he had no problem joining the band on stage at short notice. Carsten first came into contact with Alphaville through Jakob Kiersch in 2009, when they still played in different bands. Jakob later introduced Carsten to Marian Gold during a flight that all three happened to be on. Marian then contacted Carsten in 2012 when Martin Lister was unable to do a gig in Romania, and asked him to stand in for Martin on stage. Carsten has in fact never met Martin and feels that replacing him as a band member might be quite a hard task. He really hopes that he will be accepted by the fans. His first Alphaville concert as a band member was performed in freezing Alta on the 14th of June this year in the far north of Norway. He had never before been north of the Arctc circle and says that he was surprised by the effect of the midnight sun.Carsten was born on the 8th of August in 1977. He lives in Kassel, Germany. In November this year, he will be a first time father. We asked him about the upcoming South American tour in October, and he replied that he and his girlfriend do not see a problem with it as long as he is back in time for the birth of his child. Carsten has also been working on a PhD about Kraftwerk for some time and hopes to finish it before November. He has never met any Kraftwerk member in person, and fears that he never will, should they happen to read his PhD! Despite being a huge football fan and a supporter of Bayern München, he used to play handball in his youth. Carsten is also interested in the arts, and his girlfriend is involved professionally with art.Naturally, we have already accepted Carsten as the new band member, and we did our best to make him feel welcome and comfortable within the fan community. In fact, we’re totally grateful for his participation in the Wroclaw gig and all the upcoming ones. Our hopes are that everybody else feels the same way and we wish him all the best for the future.

Hi, I’m Andrea Ruby from Botkyrka, Sweden. I’ve loved Alphaville since 1984 when my brother played the new Forever Young album to me, and Alphaville has a part of my heart ever since. My first Alphaville gig was in Stockholm in April 1996. Unfortunately I was badly squashed against the first row fence, so I didn’t go to any pop/rock concerts until Alphaville played in Umeå in March this year (sadly Martin Lister’s last gig), and then again in Wroclaw. Next one up will be Asker, Norway. Looking forward to seeing you all at the party in Paris!

Hi, I’m Andreas Engfeldt from Gävle/Tullinge, Sweden. I became a hardcore fan in 1988 after hearing “Afternoons in Utopia”. Also my first Alphaville concert was in 1996, but in Uppsala. Now I have attended another 18 concerts and will celebrate 20 concerts in Paris. One of my dreams came true after I had participated in the “We Heard The Call vol. II” project with my own version of ”Red Rose”: I got to know a studio technician who helped me give out my first own album “Crossroad” through my one man project ”Snömodd”. Like Andrea I am looking forward to seeing you all in Paris!

Alphaville MK XIII: Marian, Maja, Martin, Dave and Jake

You might have noticed that the huge intro-photos have changed recently. For those of you who fell in love with the prior ones: here’s a little galery of them. Alphaville MK XIV? …more soon.

ALPHAVILLE – LONDON SKY (short version)

If you followed our blog you probably already came across mentionings of LONDON SKY here and there - exactly, like KALTE ASCHE many moons ago visitors of alphavillenow.com had the chance to win an exclusive mp3-file in full stereo from the long version of this song, whilst the video of the short edit here comes low res and mono. LONDON SKY is a demo, yet unreleased and exclusively available for your pleasure here at www.AlphavilleNow.com

If you like this, feel free to put some links up directing to this post (http://goo.gl/c4DsKM). Grabbing the video instead and uploading it to other platforms is NOT what you’re supposed to do ;)

"London Sky" Lyrics (Lyrics: Gold / Music: Gold-Lister)

Men on the roofs - who they are no one knows

Men on the roofs going where no one goes
Men on the roofs - who they are no one knows
Men on the roofs going where no one goes

There are men on the roofs against the grey-white sky
There are men on the roofs and I don’t know why

They follow the clouds crossing other people’s places
They walk with the wind and they don’t leave traces

Men on the roofs, who they are no one knows
Men on the roofs going where no one goes

Ether’s line,
lag of time
World is gone,
northern song

Chimneys write
clouds in flight
It’s no lie
London sky

To the memory of Martin Lister
Of course I could grab my calender and count back the days to start this post with an accurate “it’s been ## days since….” – but I don’t like to. Accurate figures don’t make any difference here, and be sure that continuing with ‘…’ behind ‘days since’ was not because of style or comfort: It is, still, hard to put in words and even harder to realize that Martin has left the stage, that Martin has – passed away. It feels too surreal, and that hasn’t changed with whatever number of days have gone since.
For me, personally, theres still a lot of Martin around, and that will persist, be it in the countless melodies he created for and with Alphaville, or be it in the memories of our calls, talks, chats and concerts. Martin has left a huge footprint, not only in the past 19 years of Alphaville history, but also in the hearts and memories of the people who met him, who worked with him, who are his friends and family.
I remember Martin as a most congenial person, and even if the following may sound pathetic I can’t describe him any other way: when you met him, you instantly wanted to become friends with him, and I think you really could, if you wanted to.
Maybe you like to spend some time with learning more about Martin, or simply with refreshing some memories; so, if you feel like it, you can read all articles on AlphavilleNow.com related to Martin in a special feed, just hit the “MARTIN LISTER" link in the main navigation, and below this article all Martin related ones will appear.Take care,
