Seeds - From The Secret Lives of Alphaville

The original lyrics of the track were written in German titled „Leben Ohne Ende“ which were later translated into English as “Seeds” in order to obtain a harmonious b-side for the ‘Big In Japan’ single. The German version was inspired by a lyric for one of Bernard’s earliest compositions then titled ‘Red Rose’ (not to be exchanged with the song of the same name from ‘Afternoons in Utopia’). A decade further on Bernard’s ‘Red Rose’ would turn into “Iron John”, again with different words, since the former ones ended up in ‘Seeds’.

To me Bernard’s tune was an electronic love song with its robotic, machinelike groove set against a highly romantic mood expressed by its original English lyrics, written and sung by our Bernie himself. But due to the Kraftwerky touch of the music I decided to provide it with German lyrics.

I kept the idea of a love song but changed the setting into a surreal ambience of social desaster, genetic engineering and political manipulaton. These images delivered the backdrop to Bernard’s love story in which our “girl” works in a “factory” which produces the “genes of the world”, the origin of all being in this future world and in fact a counter-image to the idea of “love” and “womanhood” as the givers of life.

A few months later on Bernard and Frank began working on new music and suddenly there occured a possibility for a new song. That moment is an unstable, fleeting instant. You have to catch the bubble as it flies or it is gone for good. I desperately needed words to fixate the melodic ideas for the track and what was at hand were the fresh lyrics for Bernhard’s ‘Red Rose’. I grabbed them and ‘Leben ohne Ende’ came to life.

From mid-1983 on Alphaville sailed through a storm of unlikely events. We signed a big deal with a big record company, started a big production for the big international markets and had a big schedule for our Big in Japan single. We almost forgot we would need a b-side for it. And naturally there was only one song that would come into question.

Who’s that new guy on stage with Alphaville?

Here’s a synopsis of an Interview with the new keyboard guy on stage, Carsten Brocker - led and summed up by Andrea Ruby and Andreas Engfeldt from Sweden:

After the concert in Wroclaw, we had the opportunity to meet Alphaville’s new keyboardist, Carsten Brocker. A laid-back and happy chap, he kindly made time for a chat with us. Carsten has listened to Alphaville since a young age. Through the years, he has played the keyboards in several different bands, but this is the first time that he is in a band as big as Alphaville. He finds it easy to learn to play new songs quickly, so he had no problem joining the band on stage at short notice. Carsten first came into contact with Alphaville through Jakob Kiersch in 2009, when they still played in different bands. Jakob later introduced Carsten to Marian Gold during a flight that all three happened to be on. Marian then contacted Carsten in 2012 when Martin Lister was unable to do a gig in Romania, and asked him to stand in for Martin on stage. Carsten has in fact never met Martin and feels that replacing him as a band member might be quite a hard task. He really hopes that he will be accepted by the fans. His first Alphaville concert as a band member was performed in freezing Alta on the 14th of June this year in the far north of Norway. He had never before been north of the Arctc circle and says that he was surprised by the effect of the midnight sun.Carsten was born on the 8th of August in 1977. He lives in Kassel, Germany. In November this year, he will be a first time father. We asked him about the upcoming South American tour in October, and he replied that he and his girlfriend do not see a problem with it as long as he is back in time for the birth of his child. Carsten has also been working on a PhD about Kraftwerk for some time and hopes to finish it before November. He has never met any Kraftwerk member in person, and fears that he never will, should they happen to read his PhD! Despite being a huge football fan and a supporter of Bayern München, he used to play handball in his youth. Carsten is also interested in the arts, and his girlfriend is involved professionally with art.Naturally, we have already accepted Carsten as the new band member, and we did our best to make him feel welcome and comfortable within the fan community. In fact, we’re totally grateful for his participation in the Wroclaw gig and all the upcoming ones. Our hopes are that everybody else feels the same way and we wish him all the best for the future.

Hi, I’m Andrea Ruby from Botkyrka, Sweden. I’ve loved Alphaville since 1984 when my brother played the new Forever Young album to me, and Alphaville has a part of my heart ever since. My first Alphaville gig was in Stockholm in April 1996. Unfortunately I was badly squashed against the first row fence, so I didn’t go to any pop/rock concerts until Alphaville played in Umeå in March this year (sadly Martin Lister’s last gig), and then again in Wroclaw. Next one up will be Asker, Norway. Looking forward to seeing you all at the party in Paris!

Hi, I’m Andreas Engfeldt from Gävle/Tullinge, Sweden. I became a hardcore fan in 1988 after hearing “Afternoons in Utopia”. Also my first Alphaville concert was in 1996, but in Uppsala. Now I have attended another 18 concerts and will celebrate 20 concerts in Paris. One of my dreams came true after I had participated in the “We Heard The Call vol. II” project with my own version of ”Red Rose”: I got to know a studio technician who helped me give out my first own album “Crossroad” through my one man project ”Snömodd”. Like Andrea I am looking forward to seeing you all in Paris!

Alphaville MK XIII: Marian, Maja, Martin, Dave and Jake

You might have noticed that the huge intro-photos have changed recently. For those of you who fell in love with the prior ones: here’s a little galery of them. Alphaville MK XIV? …more soon.

ALPHAVILLE – LONDON SKY (short version)

If you followed our blog you probably already came across mentionings of LONDON SKY here and there - exactly, like KALTE ASCHE many moons ago visitors of alphavillenow.com had the chance to win an exclusive mp3-file in full stereo from the long version of this song, whilst the video of the short edit here comes low res and mono. LONDON SKY is a demo, yet unreleased and exclusively available for your pleasure here at www.AlphavilleNow.com

If you like this, feel free to put some links up directing to this post (http://goo.gl/c4DsKM). Grabbing the video instead and uploading it to other platforms is NOT what you’re supposed to do ;)

"London Sky" Lyrics (Lyrics: Gold / Music: Gold-Lister)

Men on the roofs - who they are no one knows

Men on the roofs going where no one goes
Men on the roofs - who they are no one knows
Men on the roofs going where no one goes

There are men on the roofs against the grey-white sky
There are men on the roofs and I don’t know why

They follow the clouds crossing other people’s places
They walk with the wind and they don’t leave traces

Men on the roofs, who they are no one knows
Men on the roofs going where no one goes

Ether’s line,
lag of time
World is gone,
northern song

Chimneys write
clouds in flight
It’s no lie
London sky

To the memory of Martin Lister
Of course I could grab my calender and count back the days to start this post with an accurate “it’s been ## days since….” – but I don’t like to. Accurate figures don’t make any difference here, and be sure that continuing with ‘…’ behind ‘days since’ was not because of style or comfort: It is, still, hard to put in words and even harder to realize that Martin has left the stage, that Martin has – passed away. It feels too surreal, and that hasn’t changed with whatever number of days have gone since.
For me, personally, theres still a lot of Martin around, and that will persist, be it in the countless melodies he created for and with Alphaville, or be it in the memories of our calls, talks, chats and concerts. Martin has left a huge footprint, not only in the past 19 years of Alphaville history, but also in the hearts and memories of the people who met him, who worked with him, who are his friends and family.
I remember Martin as a most congenial person, and even if the following may sound pathetic I can’t describe him any other way: when you met him, you instantly wanted to become friends with him, and I think you really could, if you wanted to.
Maybe you like to spend some time with learning more about Martin, or simply with refreshing some memories; so, if you feel like it, you can read all articles on AlphavilleNow.com related to Martin in a special feed, just hit the “MARTIN LISTER" link in the main navigation, and below this article all Martin related ones will appear.Take care,
Tobias

ps. not knowing how long they will stay online here are two of Martins web presences: Martin Lister @ Soundcloud | Martin Lister’s WebSite

”To Germany With Love”– footnotes by Marian Gold (currently available only in german)

TO GERMANY WITH LOVE

I am an emigree, I write to Germany in foreign words, a tongue of actuality
Hands in grey gloves, to Germany with love, a war between the wars…
Triumph over bygone sorrw can in unity be won

Let them all persue this purpose till reality is gone
I am an unexpected spy from the outside of my eye
Translate it first then comprehend I’m here indeed but there I stand

I write to Germany, to Germany with love…

This is the turn of colours, all real but still anseen
There is no more decision coz there’s so much in between
Let us build a nightmare nation, learn and work as never yet
That this cold new generation faith in its own fears beget

Here comes the modern rat, here comes the terror squad
Ours is the salt of wisdom, here we come all dressed in black
From the ruins risen slowly to the future turned we stand
Flourish in this blessing glorym flourish German Fatherland

I write to Germany, all quiet in Germany…

1983

Schaut uns an in unseren schwarzen Uniformen!

Alles ruhig in Deutschland…
