Alphaville MK XIII: Marian, Maja, Martin, Dave and Jake

You might have noticed that the huge intro-photos have changed recently. For those of you who fell in love with the prior ones: here’s a little galery of them. Alphaville MK XIV? …more soon.

ALPHAVILLE – LONDON SKY (short version)

If you followed our blog you probably already came across mentionings of LONDON SKY here and there - exactly, like KALTE ASCHE many moons ago visitors of alphavillenow.com had the chance to win an exclusive mp3-file in full stereo from the long version of this song, whilst the video of the short edit here comes low res and mono. LONDON SKY is a demo, yet unreleased and exclusively available for your pleasure here at www.AlphavilleNow.com

If you like this, feel free to put some links up directing to this post (http://goo.gl/c4DsKM). Grabbing the video instead and uploading it to other platforms is NOT what you’re supposed to do ;)

"London Sky" Lyrics (Lyrics: Gold / Music: Gold-Lister)

Men on the roofs - who they are no one knows

Men on the roofs going where no one goes
Men on the roofs - who they are no one knows
Men on the roofs going where no one goes

There are men on the roofs against the grey-white sky
There are men on the roofs and I don’t know why

They follow the clouds crossing other people’s places
They walk with the wind and they don’t leave traces

Men on the roofs, who they are no one knows
Men on the roofs going where no one goes

Ether’s line,
lag of time
World is gone,
northern song

Chimneys write
clouds in flight
It’s no lie
London sky

To the memory of Martin Lister
Of course I could grab my calender and count back the days to start this post with an accurate “it’s been ## days since….” – but I don’t like to. Accurate figures don’t make any difference here, and be sure that continuing with ‘…’ behind ‘days since’ was not because of style or comfort: It is, still, hard to put in words and even harder to realize that Martin has left the stage, that Martin has – passed away. It feels too surreal, and that hasn’t changed with whatever number of days have gone since.
For me, personally, theres still a lot of Martin around, and that will persist, be it in the countless melodies he created for and with Alphaville, or be it in the memories of our calls, talks, chats and concerts. Martin has left a huge footprint, not only in the past 19 years of Alphaville history, but also in the hearts and memories of the people who met him, who worked with him, who are his friends and family.
I remember Martin as a most congenial person, and even if the following may sound pathetic I can’t describe him any other way: when you met him, you instantly wanted to become friends with him, and I think you really could, if you wanted to.
Maybe you like to spend some time with learning more about Martin, or simply with refreshing some memories; so, if you feel like it, you can read all articles on AlphavilleNow.com related to Martin in a special feed, just hit the “MARTIN LISTER" link in the main navigation, and below this article all Martin related ones will appear.Take care,
Tobias

”To Germany With Love”– footnotes by Marian Gold (currently available only in german)

TO GERMANY WITH LOVE

I am an emigree, I write to Germany in foreign words, a tongue of actuality
Hands in grey gloves, to Germany with love, a war between the wars…
Triumph over bygone sorrw can in unity be won

Let them all persue this purpose till reality is gone
I am an unexpected spy from the outside of my eye
Translate it first then comprehend I’m here indeed but there I stand

I write to Germany, to Germany with love…

This is the turn of colours, all real but still anseen
There is no more decision coz there’s so much in between
Let us build a nightmare nation, learn and work as never yet
That this cold new generation faith in its own fears beget

Here comes the modern rat, here comes the terror squad
Ours is the salt of wisdom, here we come all dressed in black
From the ruins risen slowly to the future turned we stand
Flourish in this blessing glorym flourish German Fatherland

I write to Germany, all quiet in Germany…

1983

Schaut uns an in unseren schwarzen Uniformen!

Alles ruhig in Deutschland…

Questions of Happiness – Alphaville interviewed by fans; #024– end of season 01, to be continued –

David Stark: What inspired/motivated you to write a song named for “Jerusalem” of all places? Further to that, “Red Rose” revisits the image of Jerusalem. What is your connection here?

Marian Gold: Back in 1985 we were in Paris for promotional reasons. I was given the sketch for a theatre-play for which we were asked to write some music. It’s the story of a man, who at night convinces lonely passers-by on Brooklyn Bridge to commit suicide. By that he offers them as human sacrifices to his former lover. She committed suicide because of him years ago at the same location. In his frenzy, he has turned her into “Eris”, the goddess of discord. - We were unable to persue the project but I used the ambience of the play as location for JERUSALEM. Even “Eris” made it into the lyrics. The term „Jerusalem“, especially „the new Jerusalem“ of RED ROSE has an eschatological  meaning. To me all of that fitted perfectly to the subject of the play and subsequently to the song. As you see, I was very much into Neoplatonism, Aleister Crowley, Freemasons, Rosicrucians and lots of other esoteric stuff those days. It was the multicoloured, cinemascopic time after our first album. I had said goodbye to the real world and was on my way from Malkuth to Kether. Or vice versa…

David Stark: Is it coincidence that “Arianamaniacs rule the world” can also be heard as “Aryan maniacs rule the world” or is there intentional socio-political commentary in there?
Marian Gold: The song ARIANA was a present to my ex girl-friend and then manager Ariane. We wrote and recorded it the night before her birthday. A true record if you consider the length of usual Alphaville production periods. The lyrics are complete nonsense. So’s the music. God knows why we put it on TTB album. Too much blue sunshine probably.

David Stark: In Pandoras Lullaby, can you please explain the allusion behind the lyrics; “The train has departed, the toxins have started To announce that none will last”?
Marian Gold: Great images, isn’t it? I can only guess though, what they mean, for PANDORA’s enigmatic verses derive from lovely and talented Janey Diamond, with whom I collaborated quite a lot during the 90’ies. It’s a farewell song, I presume, loaded with suicidal aspects. The poetic Doppelganger of PANDORA is LAST TRAIN TO THE HEART OF THE FLOWER, also written by Janey, which, in my view, is a poem about dying. The „train“ stands for the transition from life to death and therefore should have the same meaning in PANDORA. If so it might explain the „tocsins“ and the fact that „none will last“. For those who are worried now, let me tell you that Janey’s alive and well.

Questions of Happiness – Alphaville interviewed by fans; #023

James Mooney: Always wanted to know: What is the story behind “Flame”? – It’s such a great and well produced song, with an amazing vocal. Even my 72 yr old mother loves this track, you can always tell a great track when you can play a song to any generation and they like it ( I could go on and on about this song – anyway). I feel the lyrics are so heart felt, and seem to me to be written from the heart and not just penned with no emotional input?…just hope im not wrong, if I am: Can you just make up some fitting story please?

Marian Gold: The song consists out of two productional stages several years apart. The lyrics of the verses I wrote in 1991 for a song called THUNDER & LIGHTNING, released on DREAMSCAPES in 1998. Tobi asked me to answer all these questions as detailed as possible, so here are the complete lyrics of T&L. The lines in italics were used for FLAME later on:

I was walking in the rain when the angel of my intuition whispered “hello”
And then I turned around there was you
Well, I was quite surprised to face that kind of incarnation
Love is always unexpected, love strikes blind and undirected

And it´s amazing how my life became the wildest game of all
I never knew without your love
And since I fell for you I fail to brave the heavy weather
Raging round the axis of my heart and I don´t, I don´t need to..
Whenever I see you I want thunder and lightning
Whenever I touch you I feel thunder and lightning
Whenever I hold you I feel better than the time before
That´s what I want, thunder and lightning for evermore

There were times when I was down, there were times when all my hopes had faded
My whole life just seemed to be a senseless quest for energy
But love is the answer, love is all we need my friend
Now you came and changed the weather, now I wanna live forever

Yes I admit I´m playin´ with powers that I can’t control
But I tell you, I will do the best I can
We´re on a crash course plane that´s heading down to paradise
And that is the intention of the plan and I don´t need no heaven…
Whenever I see you I want thunder and lightning..
What do you want? You know it! What do you want then? I tell you what I want
I tell you what I need. I need thunder and lightning, I don´t need no heaven…

The track as such is an uptempo rock number with an extremely wild, almost promethian expression. When we started the sessions for SALVATION in the fall of 1995, I was in desperate need for lyrics since we had written a lot of new material. The words of the then unreleased T&L seemed to harmonize nicely with my intentions for one of the new songs. So far so good but now I got stuck. The problem was the music turned the mood of the originally euphoric verses into a quite melancholic direction. It was a cold and stormy Novmber afternoon in 1995, somewhere on the Atlantic coast of France. There I was sitting in the kitchen, the only heated space of that tiny house we had rented for our production, not having the slightest idea for any further line for my new song yet still unnamed, staring at the tiny blue flame flickering in a little window at the front of the gas-heater opposite my table. It took me about 3 hours until I finally got the clue.
